State of Environment (SOE) Report launched
The State of Environment (SOE) Report 2016 was launched today at a function held at the Ministry of Environment by the Minister Mr. Thoriq Ibrahim.
Maldives first produced a State of the Environment (SoE) Report for the United Nations Global Conference on the Sustainable Development of Small Island States in Barbados in 1994.
This report presented a descriptive overview of trends in development and environmental conditions at that time. Since then, similar reports has been published in 1994, 2001, 2002, and 2004 and most recently in 2011.
The State of the Environment (SoE) is a report which represents an overall analytical overview of the state of the environment here in the Maldives; including a detailed look into the different types of challenges we are currently facing, policies and strategies which are currently in place and those which could be implemented in the future to overcome those challenges.
SoE report address a number of high priority issues pertaining to the country’s environment. These issues include climate change and sea level rise, management of solid waste and sewage, conservation of biological diversity, freshwater resources and air pollution.
Training Workshop on CITES

A Training Workshop on “Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora” (CITES), targeted for the enforcement officers of Maldives Customs Service was held today at Customs Building, The main purpose of this Training Workshop was to share information about CITES with Enforcement Officers and to brief them about the responsibilities of Maldives Customs Services in implementing this Convention.
This Training Workshop covered introduction on CITES, responsibilities of management authority, scientific authority and enforcement agency, information on species protected under CITES and CITES import, export and re-export permit.
CITES was established in 1 July 1975 and has 183 member countries. Maldives became an official party to CITES on 12th of March 2013.
BR Consultant meets Environment Ministry officials

Dr.Thomas Schaaf has met with Senior Policy Executive of Ministry of Environment and Energy Dr.Abdulla Naseer, representatives Baa Atoll Conservation Fund and staff of Biodiversity Department of Ministry of Environment.
Dr.Thomas has been hired by Government of Maldives working together with IUCN to prepare the Nomination Document for Maldives to be declared as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Apart from meeting the Minister of Environment and Energy Hon.Thoriq Ibrahim, during this mission to Maldives Dr.Thomas is scheduled to meet representatives from EPA, Fisheries Ministry, Education Ministry, Tourism Ministry, Baa Atoll Conservation Fund, visit Baa Atoll and also undertake interactions with Baa Atoll resort representatives, Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve Office staff, Island and Atoll Council and visit 2 core areas of the Reserve as well.
