BR Consultant visits Sonevafushi

Dr.Thomas Schaaf who has been assigned by Government of Maldives working together with IUCN to prepare the Nomination Document for Maldives to be declared as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve has visited Sonevafushi today as the second stop of his visit to the atoll.
Ms. Federica Sienna the resident Marine Biologist from Sonevafushi briefed the Consultant on her experiences of Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve in-terms of management of the reserve, the challenges which are there and the importance of Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve to the resort community of Baa Atoll.
The next step for the Consultant on this trip is Maalsoh Island where he is scheduled to meet the Island Council and to share experiences of Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve.
State of Environment (SOE) Report launched
The State of Environment (SOE) Report 2016 was launched today at a function held at the Ministry of Environment by the Minister Mr. Thoriq Ibrahim.
Maldives first produced a State of the Environment (SoE) Report for the United Nations Global Conference on the Sustainable Development of Small Island States in Barbados in 1994.
This report presented a descriptive overview of trends in development and environmental conditions at that time. Since then, similar reports has been published in 1994, 2001, 2002, and 2004 and most recently in 2011.
The State of the Environment (SoE) is a report which represents an overall analytical overview of the state of the environment here in the Maldives; including a detailed look into the different types of challenges we are currently facing, policies and strategies which are currently in place and those which could be implemented in the future to overcome those challenges.
SoE report address a number of high priority issues pertaining to the country’s environment. These issues include climate change and sea level rise, management of solid waste and sewage, conservation of biological diversity, freshwater resources and air pollution.
“Environment Club Guideline” launched today
“Environment Club Guideline” was launched at a special assembly held at Imaaduddin school today. The Guideline was launched by Minister of Environment and Energy, Mr. Thoriq Ibrahim.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Thoriq Ibrahim highlighted on the importance of protecting and conserving the environment and highlighted that these guidelines launched today would help to raise awareness among students to protect the environment.
Students from a number of schools participated In the assembly held today and the distribution of these “Guidelines” started today to all the schools.
